Notes on Russell Chatham
Russell Chatham (b. 1939, San Francisco) is a contemporary American landscape artist living and working in Marshall, California. The artist is the grandson of the famous San Francisco Muralist Gottardo Piazzoni. Chatham spent most of his career living Livingston, Montana inspired by the quirky nature of small town life and the subtle beauty and solitude of Paradise Valley. His imagery is often stark and romantic with vast areas of untenanted sky. Chatham works primarily in Lithograph with multiple layers that develop muted shades and soft atmospheric qualities in his work. A master of his craft, Chatham's lithographs have little to do with modern process lithography, which typically only uses 4 colors or less. His art lithographs may have 30 or 40 different layers of color, all of which are hand drawn on the printing plate with colors selected for the final effect. Chatham is widely collected and has an exhibition record that incudes over four hundred one man shows at museums, art centers, private galleries, schools, colleges and universities. Proceeds from the sale of this work benefit the Arts and Cultural Programming for Bozeman Public Library Foundation.
